Most of the Ipoh Lang are proud of their hometown – Ipoh, to be a food paradise. However, many other people commented that there are actually not much best foods to eat in Ipoh. Yet, Ipoh is not nothing much best foods, depends on how you explore it!

Therefore, as I am an Ipoh Lang, I think should take the responsibility to introduce you the top best iconic Ipoh food! Let’s begin!

 

1. Ipoh White Coffee & Egg Tart

The Ipoh White Coffee is smooth, fragrant, rich and frothy with a slightly bitter aftertaste and it is super addictive. The two best places to drink this Ipoh signature white coffee are Sin Yoong Loong and Nam Heong. Both are situated opposite of each other. Other than that, you must go and try the egg tart at Nam Heong. You will fall in love to the scent of egg inside and the crispy texture outside!

2. Dim Sum

When it comes to Ipoh dim sum, Ming Court Hong Kong Tim Sum (明阁香港点心) is the first choice for anyone who is Ipoh-mali. Yeah, Ipoh Lang will choose to have dim sum here than other places, thus you would not miss the best dim sum in Ipoh if you follow the foot of Ipoh Lang.

Recommended to reach before 7am to avoid the crowd for a more relaxed breakfast experience especially if you are coming on weekend.

3. Hong Kee Mah Chee (芬记花生糊 )

If you haven’t tried Hong Kee Mah Chee before leaving Ipoh, then you are not completed your Ipoh food trip yet, because it is the must-try delicious dessert that you cannot forget it after tried in Ipoh!

Hong Kee (芳记) is one of the most famous stall in Ipoh that sells the traditional Chinese dessert which is Mah Chee. The small stall had received a lot of compliments and features on newspaper as well the famous 8TV program “Ho Chak”.

They are selling two things: Peanut Paste Dessert and Mah Chee/Mua Chee. The Peanut Paste Dessert is having the right sweetness with a great texture which is smooth, creamy and fragrant. Whereas, the Mua Chee is fresh and soft too and the stall owner sometimes will recommend you to mix both peanut paste dessert with mua chee, I believe that it is worth to have a try!

4. Beansprout Chicken Hor Fun

If Lou Wong and Onn Kee are the to-go places for beansprout chicken rice, then Cowan Street’s Ayam Tauge & Koitiau would be the top choice for beansprout chicken hor fun. As the chicken is the most delicate while the soup of the koay teow is cooked also the most flavorsome.

Except of Cowan Street, Ipoh Lang also prefer Onn Kee Restaurant Tauge Ayam Kue Tiau. Bransprout chicken hor fun is one of the iconic Ipoh foods, many foreigners came Ipoh for this signature dish. Being able to get the right person to bring you to the right place for this dish is definitely another story.

5. Canning Garden Chee Cheong Fun

Ya, of course Chee Cheong Fun are one of the iconic foods in Ipoh because of its special sauce such as the mushroom and minced pork gravy to chili sauce and also sweet bean sauce.

Most Ipoh locals would have heard about the grumpy uncle who serves Chee Cheong Fun in Caning Garden. Their noodles are silky soft with unparalleled texture. The sauces and condiments include onion oil, crispy fried onion, sesame seeds, chili sauce, sweet sauce, mushroom sauce and green chilies. You can choose whatever you want to add inside your noodles or just take a mix of everything!

Thean Chun Coffee Shop is famous for their Caramel Egg Custard. The caramel syrup is sugary without being cloying and the custard is extremely smooth. Sweet to the mouth and cooling to the throat, it definitely works to soothe your soul after exploring the Ipoh town under the hot sun. Get yourself some dessert before end your Ipoh food trip!

7. Funny Mountain Soya Bean & Tau Fu Fah

At Ipoh, possibly one of the best Tau Fu Fah can be found in Funny Mountain, deemed the best in Ipoh by 8TV. Bathed in a sugary concoction, the tau fu fah is warm and so smooth that it will slide down your throat.

Maybe you will think it is just a normal dessert that you can get it almost everywhere but I’m guaranteed to redefine your view of this ubiquitous dessert after tried.

8. Xin Quan Fang Curry Noodles

It is also known as the Police Station Curry Mee. You can choose between mee, kuey teow and bihun. The curry broth is extremely spicy, tasting strongly of cardamom and Sichuan pepper. Their homemade char siew is heavenly, and when dipped in their special chili sauce, it feels like fireworks in your mouth.

They tend to sell out earlier than the official closing time, so morning is the best time to drop by!

9. Paris Restaurant Hakka Mee

Start your day with a savory bowl of hakka mee at Ipoh. The texture of the noodle is marvelous, as silky-smooth as bean curd skin. Garnished with minced pork that clings onto each stringy strand, this tantalizing bowl of noodles has captured the hearts of Ipoh Lang and tourists alike. You won’t be able to stop at one bowl!

10. Tuck Kee Fried Noodles

If you are visiting Ipoh, you must have a try of Ipoh Wan Tan Hor! And, the best place to try this is at Tuck Kee Restaurant.

Tuck Kee is most known for its Wan Tan Hor. The egg sauce showered on the golden brown fried kuey teow is just the right consistency. A mouthful will leave you yearning for more! An egg is also slipped in at the last moment so that you would be able to taste a whole molten yolk.

Other than the noodles the restaurant also serves braised chicken feet, blanched baby octopus and pork balls.

11. Yoon Wah Restaurant (元华饮食阁雪花啤酒)

If you are looking for a place to enjoy a drink like the locals do, then head to Yoon Wah Restaurant for a snow beer. Notice the slushie-like content in the mug? Those are actually foam that becomes crystallized when coming into contact with a frozen glass.

Yoon Wah is also an ideal place for dinner and they serve a good range of Chinese seafood and meat dishes to go along with the drinks. If you nothing to do at night, it is not bad to go and have a try!

12.源香 Guan Heong Biscuit Shop

When it comes to biscuit, Ipoh is one of the best places in Malaysia that allow you to get the handcrafted biscuit. Guan Heong Biscuit Shop is being established since 1918, they will be celebrating their 100th year of service in 2018. Instead of just keep creating traditional biscuit, Guan Heong Biscuit Shop had continuous creating different types of biscuit in order to bring creativity to the bakery world. They are famous with their well-known series of biscuits, Meat Floss with Lotus Paste Biscuit, Meat Floss with Salted Egg Yolk Biscuit, and Dried Meat with Lotus Paste Biscuit, these are their signature and best selling products.
