How much you spend in retirement will be related to what you do with your time. Before retiring, give serious thought to what you will do once you are retired. If you will be on a limited budget, as most people are, you’ll want to find affordable activities that contribute to your overall well-being. Here are some of the many wonderful things you can do with your time and energy in retirement.
Some retirees find what they miss most is a sense of contributing to another’s success. Volunteering can be a great way to continue to contribute in an area that matters to you. It could be teaching children to read, volunteering at a local school, helping out at an organization that feeds the homeless, assisting in a hospital, or using your business skills by donating time to an organization.
CONNECT WITH FAMILY
During working years it can be difficult to find time to connect with family. Retirement is the perfect time to bring these relationships back to life. Pick up the phone and start a conversation so you can talk to family members who may be far away. Or go directly to see your relatives!
Travel can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. If you have the means, by all means, plan your dream vacation. Now that you don’t have to worry about the limits of vacation time, take extended vacations. Go live in a foreign country for a while or take a long cruise.
GET A HOBBY
Did you always wanted to play a musical instrument as a child? Maybe you love and tried a cooking class but were just too busy working to pursue it. Now is the time to dive back into a hobby that you didn’t have time to pursue years ago. Start looking for something that you can get excited about. It will give you something to look forward to as well as the chance to interact with others about something interesting.
START A BUSINESS OR PART TIME JOB
Now that your career is over, start business you have always wanted. Consider using your career experience to start something small or take your existing part-time business and expand it into a full-time enterprise. Or do you still want a place to go everyday? Find a fun part-time job with a company you love. Having this job will not only bring in a little extra income, but it will give you a place to socialize each day.
